Siting Requirements
The location of the waste containment pond is the first decision which should be made when planning the new facility. Several of the most important considerations in choosing the pond location are waste collection point location and elevation, proximity to milking facilities and residences, soil type and groundwater level. ISDA setback requirements listed below must be followed when siting the containment pond:
- 100' from a stream or drain
- 100' from a private domestic well
- 1000' from a public well
- 100' from any residence
- Earthen lagoon bottom must be located 2' above the high seasonal ground water level
- Earthen lagoon bottom must be located 2' above fractured bedrock or gravel
The following offices should also be contacted for any possible setback requirements:
- County/City Planning and Zoning office
- Local Highway Department or County Road Department
- Utility Companies or "DIGLINE" service
- Canal/Irrigation/Drainage Companies
Several other important considerations during the planning process are the presence of wetlands, archeological resources, future expansion plans, adjacent landowners and prevailing wind direction.
